Book one follows a single winter on the wall. Each chapter is told by one house, so every chapter sees the same night differently.

The ice records every winter. A warden reads it and finds a winter that should not exist.

The bells ring a signal no one alive has heard. It means: something is crossing the moon.

The pine road
Two scouts follow tracks that start in the snow and end in the air.

House Ashgrove
Iron in the ice
A smith is asked to forge a chain strong enough to hold something that flies.

The low flyer
It passes so close to the snowfield that the drifts melt in a line behind it.

All houses
Council of six
Six houses, one table, and the first vote in a century that everyone agrees must be unanimous.
